Week-2 had a great start with Dr. Long's insightful video message. He always guides us and provides us with life's most important learnings. Dr. Long often narrates a story and uses metaphors to convey his messages. This week's guidance comprised of two crucial ones. They were to 'Keep trying and never give up' and 'Always stay positive'.
We started with our morning meetings on Monday, where the students were provided with an opportunity to think critically. They expressed their understanding of the question posed to them. Some of them also volunteered to read the agenda. We shall have morning messages displayed every day to encourage discussions which will enhance their skills.
For English, we had a combined lesson with the two sections of Grade 1. We had our learning engagement specialists- Ms. Susan, Ms. Elizabeth, and Ms. Faridah who joined us to understand our students' reading skills/ abilities. This will help us to group them for reading sessions. In a larger group, we had a story read aloud where the students were guided to identify rhyming words. The students presented their understanding either through drawing or writing.
For UOI, students were guided to look at the mirror and draw themselves.
Students came up with varied illustrations as they observed different things in
themselves. From body parts to the shape and color of their dress, and from
outer parts of the body that are visible to inner parts that are not visible
were discussed along with how they help us. It was surprising to witness how
our students think and their thinking skills are so different from one another. This is where we have our AK Strand of Pluralism coming into the
picture, where we appreciate each others' thoughts and ideas.
In our SEL session, Ms. Latha threw some light on self-awareness. It was an apt follow-up for the UOI session. She started with a dance on body parts. Then, she displayed a book called 'I like myself' and made us realize that we must like ourselves for whoever we are. She also helped us in identifying our strengths with the help of artefacts in the form of photos and videos. The link to the book is hyperlinked above, in case students would like to revisit it again or if you'd be interested to listen to it. :)
Who thinks Maths is fun??? We at Crew One had an interesting session on counting. Students enjoyed counting beads/ beans/ counters/ blocks to present their understanding of numbers in general. Most of them also grouped their objects in groups with different numbers and made a note of them in the books.
