Whimsical Wednesday

Wednesday workout began with a quick mindfulness session with a technique called ' Rainbow Relaxation'.
Students followed the directions on the video and learned another strategy to stay calm and focussed.
Then, we had our Maths lessons where our focus is on learning and practising the concept of subtraction. Students have been learning varied strategies like backward counting, splitting with number bonds, and column method using the place value and illustrating the base ten blocks. These strategies are helpful for students to solve picture and number problems. They were also challenged to create numbers with number cards and were encouraged to use hundreds board to practise and solve problems.
Subtracting tens
During guided practice, students were given a choice to use any strategy they are comfortable with to solve the problems. They also created subtraction number sentences using the picture prompts.
Students also learned the technique of verifying their answers which in turn gave them an idea of the inverse relationship between the two basic operations of addition and subtraction.
In the last lesson, most of the students were ready with their pots and seeds. It was fascinating to witness their enthusiasm and also to know that they knew a lot about gardening and parts of a plant.
This activity was a provocation for the students to explore one of the life cycles. Also, to get a hands-on experience of how a plant grows and how does a life cycle of a plant looks like. We shared an interactive website with the students where they had to identify the different stages of the cycle. Thereafter, students illustrated the life cycle in their books.
Students took the initiative and sowed different seeds like fenugreek, coriander, spinach, sorrel, and chili seeds. They watered their seeds after covering them with soil and placed the pots outside for them to receive air and sunlight.
Some students also displayed their existing pots with a variety of plants and watered them. :)
Using the interactive tool to identify the stages of the life cycle of a plant.
Students volunteered and expressed that they will water the seeds every day to observe them grow. They will then witness the life cycle of a plant and see their learning coming to life. :)
